합천옥계서원은 율곡 이이의 저서 『격몽교결』과 『해동연원록』을 보관하기 위해 건립되었다. 옥계서원은 원래 영조 3년(1725) 향곡동에서 약 4km 떨어진 곳에 창건되었으나 흥선대원군의 서원폐쇄정책으로 인해 폐쇄되었다. 고종 6년에 마을 동쪽에서 약 200m 떨어진 곳에 다시 지었다. 학원은 강당, 소원사, 내삼문, 외삼문, 관리사 등으로 구성되어 있습니다.
