봉정사는 672년 의상대사가 창건했다고 전해진다. 그러나 다른 문헌에는 의상대사의 제자 능인대득이 창건했다고 기록되어 있는 것으로 보인다. 한국전쟁 당시 사찰과 관련된 많은 문서가 소실되면서 역사의 상당 부분이 유실됐다. 1972년 극락전 개축공사를 하던 중 1363년에 중수했다는 기록이 발견됐다. 이는 극락전이 우리나라에서 가장 오래된 목조 건축물임을 구체적으로 입증했다.
