미륵대원 석사지(사적 제317호)는 충청북도와 경상북도 사이의 하늘재 기슭 남쪽을 향하고 있다. 신라의 마지막 왕자 마우이태자가 금강산으로 여행하던 중 어느 날 밤 꿈을 꾸었는데, 그곳에서 관세음보살이 불상을 세우라 명하였다. 그 결과 그는 현재의 미륵리 자리에 여신의 뜻을 기리기 위해 절을 건립하게 되었다. 사찰명은 1977년과 1978년 청주대학교 발굴조사를 통해 밝혀졌고, 1980년 이화여대 연구진이 사찰 경내를 더욱 정밀하게 조사했다.
