位於全羅北道茂朱的赤相山（海拔1,034m）周圍是陡峭的層狀岩石壁。山頂盆地有一個湖，名叫「赤山湖」；沿著湖的山脊矗立著高達8,143m的赤尚山城。在高麗時期，該地區是戰爭時期平民的避難所。城牆建於朝鮮時代。
