位于全罗北道茂朱的赤相山（海拔1,034m）周围是陡峭的层状岩石壁。山顶盆地有一个湖，名叫“赤山湖”；沿着湖的山脊矗立着高达8,143m的赤尚山城。在高丽时期，该地区是战争时期平民的避难所。城墙建于朝鲜时代。
