전라북도 무주의 적상산(해발 1,034m)은 깎아지른 듯한 성층암벽으로 둘러싸여 있다. 산 정상에 있는 유역에는 '적상호'라는 호수가 있다. 호수를 둘러싸고 있는 능선을 따라 8,143m에 달하는 적상산성이 우뚝 솟아 있다. 고려시대에는 전쟁 시 민간인의 피난처였다. 성벽은 조선시대에 축조되었다.
