這座著名的廣場從前全羅南道省政府辦公廳一直延伸到錦南路地區，是具有里程碑意義的 5 月 18 日民主起義的發生地。 1980年5月，全羅南道政府辦公大樓是公民抵抗運動的總部，也是多次集會的場所。自1996年以來，該廣場被正式稱為「5月18日民主廣場」。
