구 전라남도청사에서 금남로 일대까지 이어지는 이 유명한 광장은 5·18민주화운동의 랜드마크가 일어난 곳이다. 1980년 5월 전라남도청사는 시민항쟁의 본부이자 수많은 집회의 현장이었다. 이 광장은 1996년부터 공식적으로 5·18민주광장으로 알려졌다.
