The waves that break refreshingly to open up the blocked heart, and the columnar joints on the coast in the eastern part of the Jungmun Tourist Complex, surrounded by dark red hexagonal stone pillars stacked elaborately as if carved by God, like a folding screen, are natural blessings where you can feel the greatness and exquisiteness of nature at the same time. It is a tourist resource and a designated cultural property monument of Jeju Island. When you look at the columnar joints formed due to tectonic shifts in the distant past, it seems as if the sad story of a mason is immediately conveyed in the white crumbling foam. When the waves are strong, they create a spectacular sight with waves rising over 20m high. It is a popular tourist destination due to its natural scenery.


* Columnar jointing is a vertical joint in the shape of a column that appears mainly in basaltic lava flows and is polygonal (usually 4 to 6 polygonal), formed when thick lava (approximately 1,100 degrees Celsius) flows from the crater and cools rapidly. It is said to be formed as a result of contraction that occurs, and the columnar joints here are 30 to 40 meters high and about 1 km wide, making them the largest in Korea.


* Geologically, it is a columnar joint, but administratively, it is located in Jungmun-dong, Seogwipo-si, and is called “Jisatgae Rock” based on the old name of this place, “Jisagae.”
