At the tomb of King Danjong, the 6th king of the Joseon Dynasty, he lost the throne to his uncle, Grand Prince Suyang, and was exiled to Cheongnyeongpo. He was killed at the age of 17, and his body was dumped in the Donggang River. There was no one to take care of him for fear of the afterlife, but Yeongwol Lake Commander Eom Heung-do collected the body and enshrined it in the current Jangneung Royal Tomb. Later, in 1698, during the reign of King Sukjong, Danjong was restored as king and the tomb was established as a royal tomb, and the tomb was named Danjong and the tomb was Jangneung. The pine trees around Jangneung are all bent as if bowing towards the tomb, creating a sense of wonder in those who see them. The Danjong Cultural Festival is held on a grand scale every year on the last weekend of April, and in particular, the Joseon Dynasty national emblem reenactment event is solemnly recreated with over 1,000 people and 49 types and 275 types of tools. On June 30, 2009, 40 royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, including Jangneung, were registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
