도시 이름 조안(Joan)의 유래는 '새들이 평화롭게 사는 곳'이라는 뜻에서 유래됐다. 남양주 조안면은 2010년 '슬로시티'로 지정돼 수도권 최초의 슬로시티였다. 남한강변을 따라 팔당에서 대성리를 거쳐 양평까지 이어지는 자전거 도로가 잘 정비되어 있다. 남양주에는 운길산역에서 출발해 마진산성과 수종사를 지나 송촌독립공원에 이르는 슬로시티 산책로도 있다.
남양주의 12개 마을은 각각 다양한 지역 보물로 유명하다. 연꽃밭부터 문화유산까지. 특히 조안면은 지역사회, 친환경·유기농업, 자연환경, 전통문화, 잘 관리된 어업 등에서 호평을 받아왔다. |
