태안에서 30km 떨어진 곳에 위치한 안면도는 우리나라에서 6번째로 큰 섬으로, 1970년에 건설된 200m 길이의 다리가 태안군과 연결되어 있다. 남면과 연결된 반도는 조선시대 세금 수송의 편의를 위해 안면읍 창기리와 남면 신논리 사이의 통행을 차단하여 고립되었다. 섬의 해안에는 안면읍의 상징인 14여 개의 해변과 울창한 소나무가 즐비하다. 섬에는 목감주숲(천연기념물 제138호)과 함께 안면도 자연휴양림도 소유하고 있다.
