죽도라고 불리지만, 1999년 남포방조제 건설 이후 본토와 연결되어 오늘날의 섬은 엄밀히 말하면 섬이 아니다. 섬 입구를 따라 길가에는 횟집들이 즐비하다. 사람이 살지 않는 이 어촌섬은 대나무 숲이 울창해 대섬(대섬)이라고도 불린다.
