1984年進行的填海工程使千水萬灣成為候鳥的棲息地。此外，在曾經的泥灘上形成了佔地6400公頃的廣闊農業用地。天水灣地區由於海洋性氣候，10月至3月月平均氣溫比同緯度內陸地區高約1.2攝氏度。這樣的地理條件，使千水萬灣成為候鳥理想的越冬地。
天水滿灣位於西伯利亞北部或滿洲里到東南亞的鳥類遷徙路線的中途。因此，千水萬灣成為近200種不同種類候鳥的棲息地，全年皆可觀賞。冬季，這裡成為超過30萬隻鴨子、大雁以及鸛、琵鷺、疣鼻天鵝、白枕鶴等多種瀕危物種的越冬地。幸運的賞鳥者或許能親眼目睹數以萬計的候鳥成群飛翔在千水萬灣地區上空的壯觀景象。 |
