新万金这个名字象征着扩大和清新万庆平原和金堤平原的防波堤，这些平原以其肥沃的土壤而闻名。新万金于1991年开始建设，历时19年才完工。河口大坝长约33.9公里，平均宽290米，最宽处535米。平均x_height为36米，最高点高54米。新万金被认为是最长的人造海障，其次是荷兰须德海工程大坝。
