새만금이라는 이름은 비옥한 토양으로 유명한 만경평야와 김제평야를 넓히고 푸르게 하는 방파제를 의미합니다. 새만금 건설은 1991년 착공해 완공까지 19년이 걸렸다. 하구댐의 길이는 약 33.9km, 평균폭은 290m이며, 가장 넓은 곳은 535m이다. 평균 x_height는 36m이고 가장 높은 지점의 높이는 54m입니다. 새만금은 인공 방벽 중 가장 긴 것으로 알려져 있으며, 네덜란드 Zuiderzee Works의 댐이 그 뒤를 따릅니다.
