양림동 선교사 묘지는 광주에 기독교를 전파하고 일제강점기 광복운동에 앞장섰던 선교사 23명의 묘소이다. 광주광역시 양림동은 배유지 신부와 클레멘트 오웬 박사가 전라남도 최초의 선교사로 활동한 주요 지역이다.
선교 활동의 일환으로 배수지 신부는 제니 스피어 기념 여학교(Jennie Speer Memorial School for Girls)를 설립했습니다. 오웬 박사님은 간호사인 아내와 함께 교회를 섬기고 의료 봉사에 헌신하셨습니다. 근처에는 배유지 신부를 기리는 기념비와 오웬 박사와 그의 할아버지를 기리기 위해 건립된 오웬 기념관이 있다. 두 기념물 모두 문화 자산이며 특히 기독교 신앙을 가진 현지인들에게 높이 평가됩니다. |
