광덕사는 신라 때 자장 율사가 637년에 창건했다고 전하며, 흥덕왕 때(832) 중수하였다고 한다. 아산시와 천안시를 경계로 하는 광덕산의 남동쪽, 태화산의 남서쪽에 자리잡고 있다. 임진왜란 이전에는 충청도와 경기도에서 가장 큰 사찰이었다. 그러나 임진왜란 때 소실되었으며, 대웅전, 명부전, 천불전 등 주요 건물은 기존 시설에 비해 상대적으로 새 건물이다.
