Description of art “The basic language of simultaneity is, above all else, a reductive character. In other words, the three elements, form, color (i.e. monochrome) and space (i.e. plain) maintain unity as a plain in a state of reduction and in the relationship of equivalence. That is why the space of a painting is differentiated from a simple compositional check or a pattern of repetition. Simultaneity, one may conclude, aims at the essence of painting. The artist paints a selected motif in a situation intervened by no superfluous elements such as meticulousness of representation, sentimentality, unnecessary decorations. In addition, he pays attention only to colors and forms without any preconception of the outside world, organizes them in a solid manner to gently take out any slightest movements around them.” (Artist’s note) Simultaneity by Suh Seung-won reveals that he has returned to a single surface system while minimizing the area and the sense of space by collecting the conventional geometric units. Following such a change that took place in 1988, the artist explores a special effort to hide the background while unifying the background with the surface of the canvas. (Kim Bok-yeong, art critic)
