Description of art “Boxer 10” (1982) is a work belonging to one of Park Heung-soon’s signature series. Since the 1980s, Park has depicted the moments of a boxer’s defeat including staggering, collapsing, falling down, and falling backward instead of the typical triumphant poses. Park usually chooses a space other than the boxing ring for depicting his fallen boxers. In this work, the white ring creates subtle tension against the backdrop of a grey, abstract space whose location cannot be determined. The image of a boxer floating over the bottom of the ring foreshadows the next scene which will end in the boxer’s defeat with a fatal blow. The lonely boxer who alone confronts defeat in the ring?without even an audience?symbolically represents the struggle of the artist’s contemporaries who faced the harshness of their lives with their bare hands. It also represents an unfortunate time when people suffered from loss of hope, experiencing frustrations and rapid reversals of fortune. This work conveys Park’s intent to face up to the reality of his time in the form of a “boxer,” a symbolic figure who represents a very difficult period.
