Description of art “War: In a Barley Field” (1984) was exhibited at the 5th Reality and Utterance Group Members’ Exhibition “6.25: The Korean War” in 1984. That year, Ahn released the “War” series consisting of four paintings, including this one, the other three subtitled “In the Forest,” “6.25 and Today,” and “In the Field.” In a barley field with an ominous atmosphere, a woman is crying, holding her dead husband as her infant baby clutches her back. Behind them, a jet fighter, apparently just hit by fire, is careening through the air, emitting black smoke into the crimson red sky. By presenting the appalling, tragic imagery of people wounded by the violent nature of humankind, the painter interrogates the viewer: “Is it justifiable to destroy individual lives in the name of a social cause or the greater good?”
