Description of art | “My Village: June 1987” (1987), the second work in the four-painting series, depicts the landscape of the same street shown in Lim’s previous work. June of 1987 was a time when the temperature-in terms of public sentiment, not the weather-was the highest ever in Korean history. The figures represented at the center of the canvas are walking briskly. In contrast with how their gaits were drawn in April, two young men, playful elementary school students wearing backpacks, and a woman putting a towel around her head in the lefthand corner of the canvas, are walking in long strides with their backs erect. In the background, the mountain with its thick growth of greenery represents a summer brimming with renewed hope, not a summer laid flat by the heat. As such, Lim captures every moment in detail, as if the street were a stage. | ||||||
