Description of art “Face-Morning” (1995) is a work that introduced Lim Ok-sang’s use of clay, a departure from the paper relief that he had tended to work with until that point. Lim prefers watery media to greasy oil pigments, and the kinds of media that can be mixed with water are paper and soil. Although he mixed soil and paper due to technical limitations, he wanted to finish this work with pure earth. The reason is that the earth symbolizes the beginning and the end of human life. Onto the faces of ordinary people, Lim transfuses earth?earth in the land as a source of life, as a connector to life, and the earth to which humans ultimately return.
