Description of art “Figure?Folding Screen” (1990) is a series resulting from Hong Soun’s attempts to create installation works, which represents a departure from his previous experiments on planar canvases. For this work, he installed a black light inside a dark room to highlight only the “head” and the “tail” parts. This evokes the form of the male sperm, expressing the state of dying after failing to come out in time to enter a brighter space. A photo collage of people’s faces is on the head part, wrapped by Korean mulberry paper hanji as if to evoke a person covered in a shroud before reaching their final resting place. It was around the time that Hong made this work when the boundary between life and death seemed unclear for him. He delved into his art in the belief that life was in death, and that death was in life. This work alludes to the times of hardship that he had to face.
