Description of art | Lee Yong Deok makes ordinary people his main characters, and captures onto a sculpture the ordinary movements of those who you could easily bump into on the street. “Walking on the Street 0410” (2004) is part of his series featuring people walking, in which the engraved, anonymous people are focusing only on walking without expressing any emotions. This work produces an optical illusion that renders the works embossed from afar, yet as the viewers come closer to the work, they realize that what they had believed to exist is actually absent, finding their basic system of perception overturned. At the same time and space, the viewer’s experience of looking at the sculpture from different angles transforms the room into an empty space where reality and illusion intersect?a fluid space where the sculpture constantly changes as it is viewed from different angles, thereby expanding the domain of sculpture itself. | ||||||
