Description of art “Lighting Book” (2013) comprises a total of thirty-six transparent plastic object in the shape of books, installed with LED lighting inside. The surface of each object is imprinted with a simple book cover design that includes letters and images. To Kang, a book transcends its material form?a bundle of paper?and is perceived as a world that offers an endless scope of imagination. Kang believes that even as time passes and a book’s material properties like paper and ink are lost, the knowledge acquired through reading the book will continue to glow, which led her to create these digital books. Kang’s “lighting books” aim at “taking books beyond their use as mere object” to express the “physical sense of books lined up on a bookshelf ”?in other words, the physical presence of books and the rapture of the fantastic world that unfolds when we open a book. The light that glows from inside the books make concrete the new space created in the work, resulting in a dramatic effect.
