Description of art The ten symbols of longevity, which refer to the ten living creatures that symbolize longevity, are also the objects of nature-worship that have long dominated the spiritual world of East Asians. While ten longevity symbols are one of the favorite themes used in folk paintings, folklore or artistic embroidery in Asia commensurate with their long history, they were rarely used as a theme or subject matter in Western paintings. Oh’s “Ten Symbols of Longevity” is regarded as a modern version of the “Ten Symbols of Longevity.” Steering clear from stereotypical displays of the traditional Ten Symbols of Longevity painted with primary colors, Oh depicts a harmonious scene of deer, turtles, and cranes together in nature, which retains the mysterious spirit of the forest, using fresh purple tones.
