Description of art Koo’s “Breath” series, which followed “In the Beginning” and “Good- Bye Paradise” was an extension of his attempts to memorialize all that are destined to perish. The death of his father and this series marked an important turning point for Koo. It was with the “Breath” series that he broke away from his immersion in self-identity and began to seek distance from the self, expanding his interests and perspective from portraying youth in despair and isolation to all living beings and objects. Experiencing his father’s death paradoxically led him to explore beyond a single living being to all that existed in this world. The image of the pocket watch in “Breath 1” signifies time, the most immediate among the many elements that make up life.
