Description of art The ridiculous performances in the “Container Series” carry critical satire against the reality of Korean society. The container box made convenient to keep wares symbolizes modernity that enables versatile use of minimal space as a mobile storage. In addition, the containers that the government used as a tool to suppress people’s demand and resistance from 2008 to 2009 are also the metaphors for violence and absurdity continuing from past to present. In the “Container Series-Hamjinaebi, Goryeojang” (2009?2010), the containers are also transformed into the sites where a traditional Korean wedding gift box ham is delivered before a marriage ceremony, and a modern version of ancient burial practice goryeojang takes place. In line with Jo’s humorous organization, the work uses the cargo container as symbolic space to parody the bitter phenomena wherein men at the marrying age give up on finding a mate because the price hike has made housing unaffordable, and cannot afford to support their elderly parents, either.
