Description of art “S.O.S.?Adoptive Dissensus” (2009) is a video project capturing the performance held in and out of the Hangang River cruise ship in Yeouido, Seoul with an invited audience. It features discourses on the theme of urban development and preservation, and humans and cities, staged in the style of theatre. As the ship passes under the bridges along the Hangang River one by one, along with Nodeul Island, Jeoldusan Martyr's Shrine, and Jamdubong dock, the audience encounters a speech by the captain; a group of demonstrators holding mirrors at specific sites following the riverside, who are in fact instructed to do so by Lim; performances by wandering couples; and voices of unconverted longterm prisoners turned the released on parole. Lighting installed on the ship constantly lights up the surrounding of the Hangang River?every corner of the piers, apartment buildings along the riverside, skyscrapers, and construction sites. In the performance, the audience can be an object and subject at the same time, and these synthetic experiences of them comprise a major part of the project. “This performance throws questions on the relationship of memory and speed, resistance from it, and the relationship between humans and nature inside the city. In this rapidly changing environment, the dizzy process of globalization seems as though ‘we have already seen it’ and ‘we have already lost it,’ while wondering about this unstable time……. With Seoul as its stage the ship moves around as an actor. Meanwhile the audience is no longer a spectator; they are inside the belly of the ship. The ‘swallowed audience’ follows along the stream of the Hangang River?lifeline or viscera of the actor?listening to the voices from inside and outside or here and over there. Although the audience sits in chairs, they move forward. The relayed sound live from the riverside to the ship triggers ‘dance moves (waterway)’ from the cruise ship, or a performer.” ?excerpt from the Minouk Lim’s website at www.minouklim.com
