Description of art “Monster Map, 15min” (2008?2009), comprising sculptures, ten drawings and text, is a work not about “a monster,” but about “the map” of a monster. In fact neither a monster nor a map appears in the work. An exceptional circumstance, created by juxtaposing “a monster? a supernatural existence” and “a map?everyday item,” provides an environment where viewers can contemplate the strange, that is, the unreal, senseless, unusual things hidden in everyday life. Chung edits and exaggerates obscure memory she recalls for the fifteen minutes while walking around the studio, her head lowered the entire time; this work is a record of those fifteen minutes. “A map of the monster” is produced by the idea that “unreality that always appears in reality” embodies direction and domain. Finally the text turns into a readable “Monster Map, 15min?Text” meanwhile the image completes itself as “Monster Map, 15min?Drawing on Carbon Paper” and the sculpture “Monster Map, 15 min?Nothing to Gain or Lose.” “Monster Map, 15min,” as one of the derivatives of her previous work entitled “Ghost,” first began in 2008 and has been extended in a variety of styles and genres: drawing, installation, and performance. “Monster Map, 15min” served as a stepping stone for Chung’s projects by providing inspiration for her later works.
