文廟是供奉孔子的神社，孔子的學說構成了儒學的基礎。它也獻給他的弟子和其他偉大的儒家學者。文廟不僅是神社，也是朝鮮王朝的最高教育機構。文廟自唐代起曾被稱為文宣王廟，孔子死後被封為文宣王，元朝以後又稱為文廟。
庭院由兩個主要區域組成：設有神社的大成殿和設有研討廳和其他輔助設施的明倫堂。另外，還有東齋和西齋兩間宿舍，統稱為成均館。明倫堂前方有一棵被指定為天然紀念物第59號的銀杏樹。 |
