北漢山城始建於 132 年蓋魯王統治下的百濟時代（西元前 18 年至西元 660 年），是保護百濟免受高句麗軍隊侵害的最北端堡壘。西元475年，經過一場激戰，堡壘落入高句麗手中。結果蓋魯王被殺，百濟公主逃往熊津城。儘管堡壘倒塌和重建，北漢山城在整個韓國戰爭史上繼續發揮保護首都的重要作用。
