玉山書院是為了紀念儒家學者李彥積（1491-1553）的學術成就和美德而建立的。建於1572年，即宣祖5年，隔年改名為現名。它是興宣大院君頒布的書院廢止令中排除的47所書院之一。雖然建築結構在建築方面沒有重大意義，但建築物獨特的空間佈局卻很難被忽略。獨樂堂位於玉山書房以北700公尺處，是李彥積的度假別處和書房。
