대구수목원은 오래된 위생매립지 자리에 위치하고 있습니다. 이 지역의 복원은 1996년부터 2002년 5월 개장까지 여러 단계를 거쳤습니다. 이곳에는 21개 정원에 거대 선인장, 꽃, 약초, 나무 등 수천 종 이상의 식물이 자라고 있습니다. 수목원은 대구시민의 생태교육장이자 휴식공간으로 활용되고 있다. 여름방학 기간 동안 학생과 어린이를 위한 생태체험 프로그램이 정기적으로 진행됩니다. 인근 관광지로는 앞산공원, 두류공원, 팔공산, 비슬산 등이 있습니다.
