녹동서원은 임진왜란(1592~1598) 때 일본의 침략으로부터 우리나라를 수호하는 데 크게 기여한 김충선(1571~1642) 장군을 기리기 위해 1789년에 건립되었습니다. 1868년에 학교가 폐쇄되었다가 1885년에 복원되었다가 1971년에 현재의 위치로 이전되었습니다. 현재는 매년 3월 제사를 지내는 이 전당에 김 장군의 위패가 모셔져 있다. 녹동서원 주변 관광지로는 녹동사, 숭의당, 향양문, 비석 등이 있습니다.
