가을 수확기가 지나면 철원평야의 들판에는 떨어진 이삭이 깔려 철새들에게 풍부한 먹이가 됩니다. 또한 비무장지대의 잘 보존된 생태계는 깨끗한 물과 건강한 서식지를 제공하여 철원 일대를 철새들의 천국으로 만들고 있습니다.
들판을 돌아다니는 두루미와 저수지에서 떼지어 날아오르는 새들의 모습은 조류 관찰자들의 탄성을 자아낸다. 국내 최대 흰이마기러기 개체수를 자랑하는 철원에서는 110여종의 새를 관찰할 수 있으며, 그 중 일부는 국보로 지정되어 있다. 예를 들면 두루미, 독수리, 흰꼬리수리, 검독수리뿐만 아니라 겨울을 나기 위해 한국으로 이주하는 청둥오리, 얼룩부리오리 등이 있습니다. |
