여수에서 남서쪽으로 77km 떨어진 곳에 위치한 초도는 다양한 크기의 섬들로 둘러싸여 있다. 섬에는 상산봉 중앙을 중심으로 세 개의 작은 어촌마을이 있다. 정상에서 바라보는 일몰과 썰물 때 진막마을과 앞바다 목섬 사이에 바다가 갈라지는 광경이 유명한 곳이다. 섬에는 해변이 두 군데 있는데, 정강해수욕장은 가족단위 휴양지로 인기가 높다. 여수~초도 구간에는 하루 1편의 여객선만 운항된다. 숙박객에게 인기 있는 활동인 인근 섬으로의 크루즈 투어도 있습니다.
