옥산서원은 유학자 이언적(1491~1553)의 학문적 업적과 덕을 기리기 위해 건립되었습니다. 1572년(선조 5)에 창건되었으며, 이듬해 현재의 이름을 갖게 되었다. 흥선대원군이 내린 서원폐지령에서 제외된 47개 서원 중 하나였다. 건축물의 구조는 건축학적으로 큰 의미를 지니지는 않지만 건물의 차별화된 공간 배치는 눈에 띌 정도로 눈에 띈다. 이언적의 별관이자 서재였던 독락당은 옥산서원에서 북쪽으로 700m 떨어진 곳에 있다.
