감곡성당은 1896년 프랑스에서 신부가 된 뒤 바로 한국으로 건너온 카밀루스 부용 신부에 의해 창건됐다. 교회는 교회를 위한 땅을 마련해 달라는 신부님의 기도로 인해 성모 마리아에게 봉헌되었습니다.
100년이 넘는 오랜 역사를 지닌 교회입니다. 6·25전쟁 당시 북으로 귀환한 북한군 주민들의 쉼터로 이용됐다고 한다. 현재의 건물은 1930년에 서울 명동성당을 본따서 지은 것이다. 또한 교회 부지에는 원래 부용 신부의 집이었던 매고에 박물관이 있는데, 현재는 작지만 중요한 이 대성당의 역사를 보여주는 박물관으로 개조되었습니다. |
