玉山書院孔子学院は、儒学者イ・オンジョク（1491～1553）の学業と徳を記念して建てられました。宣祖5年1572年に創建され、翌年に現在の名前になりました。興宣大院君の孔子学院廃止令から除外された47の孔子学院の一つであった。建物の構造は建築学的には重要な意味を持ちませんが、建物の特徴的な空間配置は見逃せません。イ・オンジョクの別荘であり勉強部屋でもあった独楽堂は玉山書院から700メートル北に位置している。
