The May 18 Memorial Park is a resting place for citizens created to properly inherit and develop the lessons of May 18. A portion of the former site of Sangmudae was granted free of charge as a citizen park site and the park was created. This place has an area of ​​204,985㎡ ​​and is home to a traditional pond and various trees, so it is also widely used as a nature learning center for children.

< br />The 5.18 Memorial Park includes the 5/18 Memorial Cultural Center equipped with a 5/18 data room and performance and event facilities, a 5/18 status sculpture and memorial sublimation space consisting of citizen soldier statues and a memorial space, and a symbolic display of the spirit of 5/18. There is Daedong Square with a circular fountain space. There is also the May 18th Democratization Movement Student Monument and the Gwangju Student Education and Culture Center, and at the top of the park is Owoldae, a three-story pavilion that serves as an observatory. In addition, there is Mugaksa Temple, a lawn plaza, and a walking trail.
