On March 1, 1919, at 2 p.m., Son Byeong-hee and other national representatives held the Declaration of Independence Ceremony at Taehwagwan and ignited the national March 1st Independence Movement by chanting “Long Live Independence” three times. The March 1st Declaration of Independence Monument commemorates the noble spirit of independence of that day. For this purpose, on August 15, 1963, under the auspices of the National Reconstruction Movement Headquarters, donations from all citizens were raised and it was built at Tapgol Park, the site of the March 1 Independence Movement. However, in 1979, it was demolished during the Tapgol Park maintenance project and was neglected for 12 years. As voices for restoration grew in various circles, it was moved to Seodaemun Independence Park, the foundation of the anti-Japanese independence movement, in 1992. The height of the tower is 4.2m, and the March 1 Declaration of Independence and the names of 33 national representatives who led the independence movement, including Son Byeong-hee, are engraved on the back of the tower.
