진주남강유등축제는 임진왜란(1592~1598) 진주성대첩 때 왜군이 남강을 도하하는 것을 막기 위한 군사전략으로 사용되었던 등불에서 유래됐다. 축제의 하이라이트는 남강을 따라 떠다니는 등불과 지역 학생들이 직접 만든 등불 행렬이다. 이 밖에도 불꽃쇼, 수중조명쇼, 문화공연 등 다양한 행사와 프로그램도 마련돼 있다.
