설악산 자락에 있는 백담사는 신라 제28대 진덕여왕(647~654) 때 장자스님(590~658)이 창건한 사찰이다. 사찰은 화재로 소실된 후 여러 차례 옮겨져 1957년 현재의 위치에 재건되었습니다. 사원에는 다양한 보물과 암자가 있습니다. 독립운동가이자 시인이었던 만해 한용운 선생을 비롯해 많은 유명 인사들이 이곳을 찾았다. 사찰 앞 개울가에는 무수히 많은 바위탑이 있는데, 이곳에서 방문객들은 소원을 빌며 돌을 쌓는다.
