별방진은 1973년 4월 13일 제주도 기념물 제24호로 지정되었다. 성곽의 둘레는 약 950m이다. 타원형
성곽은 남쪽이 지형이 높고, 북쪽이 낮은 지형을 고려하여 축성되었다. 제주의 모든 성곽 중에서 별방진성은 비교적 상태가 양호하다. 이 성은 제주 성의 축성 방식과 규모를 보여주는 중요한 사례이기도 하다. |
