신륵사는 여주 봉미산에서 흘러나오는 남한강 상류에 자리잡고 있다. 신륵사는 신라 진평왕 때 원효대사가 창건했다고 전해지고 있으나 이를 입증할 증거는 없다. 이 사찰은 1376년 나옹혜근이 머물렀던 곳으로 유명하다. 1472년부터 사찰로 보은사로 불렸다가 1858년에 다시 신륵사로 이름이 바뀌었다.
