올릉은 조선 제11대 중종의 비인 단경왕후(1487~1557)의 능이다. 단경왕후는 13세에 중종과 결혼했다. 1506년 중종이 즉위하면서 그녀도 왕비가 되었지만, 남편의 즉위를 반대하는 아버지의 쿠데타로 인해 폐위되었다. 따라서 그녀의 무덤은 1739년까지 왕릉으로 간주되지 않았다.
