섬진강 초입에 위치한 구담마을의 가파른 제방은 하얗고 붉은 매화로 뒤덮여 있다. 구담마을과 청담마을을 잇는 약 3km의 강변길을 따라 걷다 보면 매화와 벚꽃이 만들어내는 아름다운 풍경에 감탄하게 된다. 마을 어귀에는 섬진강과 매화, 느티나무가 만들어내는 아늑한 분위기로 인해 마을이 더욱 유명해졌고, 산책을 즐기는 사람들도 늘고 있다. 영화 '고향의 봄'(1998) 등 영화 촬영지로도 활용됐다.
