This is the largest POW camp ruins from the Korean War, located in Gohyeon-ri, Sinhyeon-eup, where Geoje City Hall is located. Along the eastern slope of Geoje Gyeryongsan Mountain (554m), passing the restored old Gohyeon Castle and the city hall building next to it, you can see the remains of the POW camp guard building standing on the hill to the left of the wall of Gohyeon Middle School. An exhibition room, a video room, and a souvenir shop are installed within the historical site. The exhibition room displays the origins, background, life history, mementos of prisoners, riots, and release of prisoners of war, and the video room displays films shot at the time and interviews with former prisoners. A 10-minute video about the prisoners is shown, and the symbolic sculpture is titled "War, Division, and Harmony." The situation during the Korean War can be inferred from the fierce battle by looking at the bullet holes in the dented helmet, and the war caused a lot of damage. Many captured prisoners were interned here on Geoje Island.
The sight of South Korean and North Korean soldiers removing barbed wire expresses the strong will to achieve unification through harmony among the Korean people. At the time, the POW camp barracks were a replica of the entrance to Camp 78, which served as the command center for communist prisoners, and the 64th Field Hospital was in charge of medical care for prisoners injured by guards and prisoners of war. This is a place where you can see the kitchen where food was distributed to the 170,000 prisoners at the time and its interior, and the toilet bowl placed under the open-air toilet is where the fiercely pro-communist prisoners at the time hunted down reactionaries through people's trials and killed them on the spot with clubs and stones. It is a reminder of the miserable lifestyle of people who used tools to pack dismembered corpses and throw them away in Gohyeon Bay. The lion statue standing in front of the Chinese POW barracks was created to be used by Chinese POWs during ceremonial events and anniversaries. The M463-7 used at the time of the Korean War, as well as helicopters, 8mm howitzers, command armored vehicles, and naval guns, are on display along with the security headquarters and ammunition depot at the time. Remnants of existing historical sites reminiscent of the miserable situation at the time can be viewed in conjunction.
